前两期谈bat，我再想到batten这个字。Batten的字源跟蝙蝠或者球棒都没有关系，而是指木工所用的小木条，用作修补破旧的地板家具等。
常用的短语to batten down the hatch，原为航海术语。Hatch是储物柜的门，风雨来临前，要好好加固这些柜门，一般做法是利用木条把门紧紧钉好，或者在门上盖上帆布，四边用木条钉紧，这个程序就叫to batten down the hatch。
引伸到其他情况，遇见麻烦时，先做一些准备工作，就是to batten down the hatch。譬如：日本爆发核辐射危机，香港旅游业大受打击，只好咬紧牙关，捱过难关。
The nuclear crisis in Japan means that fewer and fewer tourists will go there. Hong Kong's tourism industry has to batten down the hatch until the hard times are over.
